Ok, Cinema 4D… let’s do this.

To be an industrial designer you have to be three people at the same time. You have to be the crazy person. Then you have to be the person who reviews those crazy ideas and says, “no, not that, and not that either”. The third person has to be the observer who stands off to the side and managers that process.

If you fall in love with what you’re doing too soon in the process, you’re eliminating all the chances to come up with a different variation of the idea. There has to be a disinterested observer of the process.

You have to recognize your ego structure, and you have to be very humble and know that you should be sort of scared each time you start something new because it could go horribly awry.

“I was told to create something that involved spaceships and submit a concept. They said as long as it portrayed spaceships they wouldn’t question anything. So I agreed.” — Shinichiro Watanabe - Cowboy Bebop

“That’s why I put together [industrial designer] Syd Mead and people like that who were actually serious futurists, great speculators, great imagination, looking to the future, where the big test is saying, draw me a car in 30 years’ time without it looking like bad science fiction. Or draw me an electric iron that will still be pressing shirts in 20 years’ time without it looking silly. That’s the stretch, that was the target: that I wanted the world to be futuristic and yet felt — not familiar, because it won’t be — but feel authentic.” — Ridley Scott - Blade Runner

“Of course, to work alone is both harder and easier. There’s nothing fabulous about drawing comic books. When you finish, you’re relieved and happy, but it’s the middle of the night and there is no one to share your joy with. With filmmaking you have a party with your crew and then the premiere. All that stuff you miss when you just draw manga. But there are drawbacks to filmmaking too: sometimes it’s really difficult to get your ideas across to your crew, for example. But it’s true that I’ve discovered the joy in working with other people.” - Katsuhiro Otomo

“If you have the personalities down, you understand them and identify with them; you can stick them in any situation and have a pretty good idea of how they’re going to respond. Then it’s just a matter of sanding and polishing up the jokes. But if you’ve got more ambiguous characters or stock stereotypes, the plastic comes through and they don’t work as well.” — Bill Watterson
